Dr Tapas Biswas has 32 years of research and teaching experience in global water resources management and food security. He topped the university merit list in his BSc with Honours (Agri Engineering & Soil Science) in 1980 and earned his MSc (Soil Science) topping his calss at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute ( IARI), India in 1983. Dr Biswas obtained a PhD jointly from the International Rice Research Institute (Philippines) and IARI in 1988. His PhD research work was awarded the Indian Prime Minster award in 1989. Dr Biswas has held positions at the IARI, New Delhi, India, then the Unvrsity of Sydeny, the University of New South Wales, the University of South Australia, Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), the Australian National University, the Murray Darling Basin Authority (MDBA), South Australian Research & Development Institute (SARDI) and the Environmental Protection Authority-NSW, Australia. He has also worked in a number of countries including the China, USA, Israel, Middle East, South and East Asia on growing crops with poor quality water and capacity building (education and training). Currently Dr Biswas is a Senior Scientist with the CSIRO, Australia. He has over 120 publications and serves as a guest editor for the ‘Soil Research’ journal and is on the editorial board of the ‘Journal of South Pacific Agriculture’. Dr Biswas is the vice-president of the Hydrological society of Canberra, Australia and an executive member of a working group of the International Commission on Irrigation & Drainage (ICID). Dr Biswas is a strong advocate of innovative education, research and community involvement, especially women participation in achieving food security and a globally sustainable water resources.
